Auckland’s Varicose Veins Laser Treatment Specialist

A common condition, varicose veins are both a cosmetic concern and a potential health problem.

Varicose veins are essentially distended, swollen veins present in the subcutaneous layer. Often the cause of much pain and discomfort, this condition occurs in the leg when the valves within a vein begin to fail. Since blood is pumped back to the heart against gravity, these one-way valves are required to stop blood pooling in the veins.

When it comes to treating this condition, the required procedure will ultimately depend on the severity: small varicose veins can be treated via sclerotherapy, while larger, more problematic ones require laser therapy or surgery.

Wherever possible, Mr. Venu Bhamidi will opt to perform varicose vein laser therapy rather than surgery, as it is the preferred less-invasive option.

Endovenous laser therapy

Endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) is a minimally invasive technique used to obliterate the major problematic vessels causing the varicose veins.

The procedure is done in an office setting with local anaesthetic and whole process takes roughly an hour. EVLT uses a laser fibre which is inserted into the vein under ultrasound guidance and advanced to top of the problematic vein. Once this is in place, local anaesthetic is delivered around the fibre and vein to make the area numb. The local anaesthetic not only helps with preventing pain, it also allows the vein to shrink down onto the laser fibre and protects the skin surface from being affected by the laser. The fibre then emits laser energy which heat the vein and causes blood to clot in the vessel, damages the vein wall and causes it to collapse, shrink and finally disappear.

This minimally invasive way is generally Mr. Bhamidi’s preferred method of treatment of large veins and avoids surgery, incisions and prolonged time off work, with patients often returning to a day or so after the procedure.
